Myths and Facts about Hypnosis:
Myth: “I will do things I can’t remember, and I will not be in control of what is happening”
Fact: The client is always aware and in control. The client is frequently asked to identify how they are feeling and can communicate at any time if uncomfortable feelings occur. The client retains full control of the session, throughout the session and will remember the session easily.
Myth: Hypnosis is some kind of illusion, it’s not a “real thing”
Fact: Hypnosis is a state of consciousness similar to daydreaming and has been measured scientifically. Brain imaging shows the hypnotic state or trance state to be a very relaxed waking state.
Myth: Hypnosis is too “out there” and not a mainstream therapeutic skill.
Truth: Hypnotherapists receive specialized training. Hypnotherapy has been used for hundreds of years in many settings. Milton Erikson, and Sigmund Freud (and many others) were known for their work with Hypnosis.
Myth: I cannot be “hypnotized” this experience will have no affect on me.
Fact: The receptivity to hypnotherapy varies from person to person. Sometimes people are surprised by how relaxed and also energized they may feel following a session.
